Do I really want a Cheap Snowboard?
So you rented a board a few times, got the hang of it and absolutely loved it. What now? Your first thought is probably that you don’t want to waste the $20-$50 on renting another day, but at the same time lift tickets aren’t cheap either! You’re at the point where it only makes sense to get on your own equipment for the sake of your riding and your pocket.
Don’t fret, you have plenty of options. If you do the right searching you can put together a Beginner Snowboard package for anywhere from $200 – $500. So what are the differences a Cheap Snowboard and a quality beginner board?. Well to start, most inexpensive off Brand Snowboards are made with a construction called capped construction. Capped construction means that the topsheet of The Snowboard is pinched over the edge of the board to the metal edge. Most quality boards will be made with a construction called sandwich or sidewall construction, where the sidewalls of the snowboard are sandwiched between the topsheet of the board and the base. Boards built like this transfer energy to the boards edges much more effectively and efficiently. As a beginner, what does that mean for you? It means that in a time where your legs are week, and you’re not sure of your movements you’ll be working alot harder to get the board to do what you need it to do.
In terms of the core of the snowboard, some cheap boards are even still foam rather than wood core. Foam is light and makes the board soft, but it breaks down very easily. These boards loose their response and energy easily and again make it harder for the rider to get the board to do what they want it to do. Quality snowboards are made with wood cores and many additional materials to dampen vibration and increase the response of the board. An entry level beginner board can have a very simple wood core construction, but the better brands will make this in a way that the board maintains its flex and helps the rider progress.
When it comes down to it, most of the well known brands will make a basic entry level beginner snowboard for about $300-$330. However, if you look hard enough you may be able to find previous year models for $150-$200. You may be asking yourself, is it worth spending $200 on the board alone when you can pick up someones busted up used set that includes everything for the same price? Absolutely, you’ve done the rental thing and now you need your own equipment. Riding a board that can effectively and efficiently transfer your energy and maintain the appropriate flex can make all the difference. A quality board can help you progress and enjoy the sport even more.
