Ski Snowboard Jackets
What can I use to waterproof ski/Snowboard gear?
The original waterproof coating on my ski jacket and pants seems to have worn off. I’ve read Scotchguard can be toxic. I think I used something called Igloo once, but I don’t even know where I got it. Thanks!
Scotch guard is garbage, I would never recommend it.
You’d be surprised at what just washing (with a non-detergent soap) and then drying can do for your outerwear. Over time dirt and oils from your skin can clog the pores of your gear reducing breathability as well as giving water a way in and the DWR (Durable water repellent) coating can be worn away a bit. The simple act of washing will clear the pores improving your breathability as well as restoring the original properties of the wp membrane. Drying will redistribute the DWR improving your first defense against snow and water.
If you still don’t see water beading on your gear companies like Nikwax and Revive X (my fav) make wash in and spray on DWR coatings. I suggest getting the spray on stuff. It works just as well but will only apply the DWR to the outside of your gear, where you need it, as opposed to how the wash in stuff will apply it inside and out. This can reduce the breathability of your gear which will cause you to get wet from the inside out. Most good ski or board shops should have this stuff, especially the bigger guys like REI, Any Mountain, Sports Authority, etc.
