Snowboard & Ski: An Overview of Resort Options in Chile by Ken Ingraham
Are you planning to learn Spanish in Chile? If so, one of the most exciting things you can do during your stay in the country is skiing. Although you will be spending many hours studying at your Spanish school in Chile, it is also important to get some recreational activity. Chile has some of the most amazing skiing and Snowboarding locations in the world. You can take advantage of this fact, experience the Andes Mountains, and enjoy winter sports at the following Chilean resorts.
Option #1- La Parva, El Colorado and Valle Nevado
With 100 kilometers of trails, the La Parva, El Colorado and Valle Nevado resorts offer the largest ski area in all of South America. This region is very close to Santiago and offers a panoramic view of the city. Valle Nevado is particularly notable because it is the home of the Snowboarding FIS World Cup. El Colorado offers an artificial snow machine that guarantees skiers optimal conditions. La Parva has 14 ski lifts and 30 trails that can accommodate all levels of skiing ability. This area also has a chute called La Chiminea and a steep wall called La Cara.
Option #2- Portillo
If you want to do more than just learn Spanish in Chile, and you seek a physical challenge, be sure explore the difficult trails of Portillo. Portillo is close to the base of Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in the entire southern hemisphere. The resort has more than 10 lifts and 20 trails. If you are learning to ski or want a refresher course, you will be pleased to find that Olympic champions teach in Portillo’s school.
Option #3- Termas de Chillan.
Another fantastic resort to check out is called Termas de Chillan. Here you will find the longest trail in the country as well as circuits for snowmobiles and dogsleds. Besides its amazing ski slopes, Termas de Chillan also contains a hot spring resort. After working hard at your Spanish school in Chile all week, you’ll love escaping to the hot springs for a relaxing soak.
Option #4- Ski Pucon
The Gran Hotel Pucon Resort and Club owns Ski Pucon. Various competitions are held at this resort, and it is known as a “snowboarding paradise.” At Ski Pucon, you can even ski on the side of a volcano. Hiking and snowmobiling are also offered.
Option #5- Antillanca
Antillanca is near the City of Osorno. The resort is surrounded by vast forests and has ample snow from June to October. Many Snowboarders frequent Antillanca because it has very extreme descents. There are also various competitions that take place at this resort.
No matter which of these resorts you select, you will undoubtedly have a memorable ski experience. Be sure to bring a camera, as the mountain vistas make for great snapshots. Also remember to practice your Spanish during your skiing or snowboarding adventure to make your trip a totally immersive experience.
